Current and Leakage Current Monitoring for Renewable Energy Systems

A solar power system is a complex power system in which various types of equipment, including solar panels, inverters, energy storage systems (ESS), transformers, and grid facilities, are interconnected. DC power generated by solar panels is converted into AC power through an inverter and, depending on the system configuration, is either stored in an ESS or transmitted to transformers and the power grid. During this process, AC or DC leakage current may occur due to insulation deterioration, damaged wiring, grounding faults, aging equipment, or other causes. Therefore, it is important to continuously monitor leakage current not only within each piece of equipment but also along the power lines connecting the equipment.
Why Is Leakage Current Monitoring Necessary?
Complex AC/DC Power Environment
Solar power and ESS systems consist of equipment that generates and stores DC power, as well as equipment that converts and supplies it as AC power. As a result, AC, DC, or combined forms of leakage current may occur depending on the location and operating conditions of the system.
Monitoring Abnormal Conditions Between Equipment
Leakage current may also occur in power lines connecting equipment, such as between an inverter and an ESS or between an inverter and a transformer, due to insulation faults or damaged wiring. By installing large-aperture leakage current sensors on power lines, abnormal conditions can be continuously monitored not only within individual equipment but also across different sections of the system.
Improving System Safety and Reliability
Early detection of leakage current allows protection and control systems to take the necessary action. This helps reduce the risk of electrical accidents and supports the stable operation of solar power generation and energy storage systems.
COBON TECH’s Solutions
AC/DC Leakage Current Monitoring Module for Solar Power Systems

COBON TECH's RCMB-H50 module is designed to continuously monitor AC and DC leakage currents by passing power lines between solar inverters, ESS, PCS, transformers, and power grid equipment through the module. Its wide aperture allows high-current power lines or multiple conductors to pass through together, detecting leakage currents occurring in connections between equipment and transmitting abnormal conditions to protection and control systems. Using fluxgate sensing technology, it detects both AC and DC leakage currents and can be integrated into systems through interfaces such as Open-Collector output and RS-485 communication.

RCMB-H50 Installation Location (Solar Power System)

Installation Location

It can be applied to various power conversion sections, such as between solar panels and junction boxes and the inverter, between the inverter and ESS, between the inverter and transformer, and between the ESS and transformer or power grid equipment. However, the actual installation location may vary depending on the system’s grounding method, power flow, protection configuration, and monitoring purpose.

Main Role

RCMB-H50 continuously monitors AC and DC leakage currents at each power conversion section of a solar power system, playing an important role in detecting electrical abnormalities and improving system safety and reliability.
